The Forbidden City and the Great Wall

Yesterday was a crazy day. We woke up for the second day in a row at 3:30am. The time change is a killer. After a huge breakfast of western and Asian food...which we couldn't get enough of...we went to Tiananen Square, Forbidden City, and the Great Wall.

Tianamen Square was packed full of people waiting in line for several hours to pay respect to Chairman Mao. Once inside the building, people are only given a few minutes before being ushered out. We did not go inside.

Next, we went to the Forbidden City. It was interesting and larger than I had imagined. You can't go inside, but you are allowed to walk around in the many courtyards. The buildings were all run down on the outside with lots of paint chipping and fading. That was disappointing, but still magnificent. Benjamin and Jackson were both great despite the heat and crowds of people.

The funniest thing happened at The Forbidden City...Jackson and Benjamin became famous. I can't tell you how many people wanted photos with the kids.

The best part of the day was the Great Wall. It was much steeper than I had imagined but we made the climb. We made it past two guard post and almost to the third, but it was so hot and humid we decided to stop. It was also run down and littered with trash...something I hadn't expected.

Tomorrow, we flyer to Guangzhou and get ready to meet Lily. I can't wait!
